You had to be there…
what an exciting day Sunday, September 27 was, when six Leo clubs met at Camp Barnes for the
Annual Leo Bash. Interviewing each one of the groups was an enlightening experience since every
school was involved in a multitude of community service activities. The enthusiasm and joy with which
they worked together was contagious. As each group was interviewed about their school activities it
became apparent that every group was outstanding.
Indian River High School LEOS meet during Pride Period to organize their Ronald McDonald support,
work with DuPont Children's Hospital, address cards for Servicemen, support and help the activities of
the FILC, hold a book drive and produce crafts for the visually impaired.
The Milford LEOS, Mike Saxon and Morgan Vance both had relatives that were LIONS that acted as role
models through the years. The club activities include a spaghetti dinner, food drives, volunteering in the
community, and a balloon challenge.
The Sussex Academy Team is busy with fund raising, supporting children in a childhood cancer program,
working with local charities, and helping their local LIONS club
Another club, the Laurel High School LEOS is involved in a Christmas party for the visually impaired,
prepares gifts for the needy, helps with Little League and local charities, raising funds, and cleaning for
the local fire department.
The Cape Henlopen Club, 160 members strong which was well represented helps five Lion Clubs in their
activities. They also have an annual mulch sale, wrap gifts for servicemen, and sponsor such activities
as Floor Hockey and a Bowling tournament .
A real highlight of the day was the presence of the DelAware State University Campus Lions Club who
came to help in the activities of the day. Courtney McClure was a LEO at Caesar Rodney High school
and when she became a student as DSU she started a college club. They now have 12 members in
many different disciplines that help with children reading, eye glass collection, collecting hats and mittens
for charity, and helping at the Lab School. The assistance of this group and the role models of the
college students was exemplary.
What a delight to meet the students,, watch the competitions which included the following challenges:
Represent ( make a club poster ), water balloon toss, Many-pede race (two-legged race), Grape-hose,
Bucket brigade ( fill a bucket as fast as you can), Penny Pitch
(catching pennies in a bucket), and Catapult.
Hot dogs topped of the afternoon. Let us say "A good time was had by all".
